The New Gold Rush?

The risks and rewards of deep sea mining
Berlin, Britische Botschaft, 18:00 - 19:30 Uhr

Should we start mining the deep-sea bed for minerals? What crucial resources could be harnessed with such a practice? And at what cost? From chemicals for cancer treatments to metal-rich minerals for solar panels, the deep-sea bed offers unparalleled resources which could revolutionise the future of human existence. Sustainable use of these resources could have significant benefits, but involves interaction with a natural environment that is challenging to access and less well understood. The fear of damage to little-known ecosystems remains central to the criticism of the practice.

Join us for a debate on the topic with experts in the field from the UK and Germany, coinciding with the publication of the UK Foresight report on the Future of the Sea and the UN Climate Change Conference 2017 in Bonn.

Speakers:
Dr. Annemiek Vink
